In the morning, we enjoy a panoramic city tour during which we will discover the Portuguese capital of the seven hills, its narrow streets and azulejos, its sense of saudade, and its Atlantic light. We will also visit the district of Belém, from where the great Portuguese navigators set sail across the oceans in the 15th century. Free afternoon to stroll around and perhaps visit Bairro Alto and its viewpoint. If you wish, you may also take an optional excursion to the towns of Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril. In the evening, we return from Restauradores Square, lively with its bars and cafés, back to the hotel.

Accommodation.

DAY 3. LISBON – LAGOS – CAPE ST. VINCENT – ALBUFEIRA

We depart early towards the south of Portugal, enjoying beautiful landscapes as we cross the long bridge over the Tagus River. Arrival in the Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal. We visit the historic city of Lagos, with its harbour from where Portuguese ships once sailed to Brazil, and its old town enclosed within ancient walls. Time for lunch.

In the afternoon, we travel to the most south-western point of the European continent. Among cliffs and often swept by strong winds, we visit Cape St. Vincent. We will also have the opportunity to photograph the nearby fortress of Sagres. Afterwards, time in Albufeira, a beautiful coastal town where you may enjoy the beach or stroll through its lively historic centre.

DAY 4. ALBUFEIRA – MÉRTOLA – ÉVORA

We travel to Faro, the peaceful capital of the Algarve, for a walk. We then continue our route towards the Alentejo region. On the banks of the Guadiana River, we visit Mértola, a walled museum-town and an important settlement during the Muslim period, dominated by its great castle, inviting us to wander through its whitewashed streets and historic corners.

Continuation to Évora, where we will visit the Chapel of Bones (entrance included), built with more than 5,000 skeletons, before enjoying this walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its medieval palaces, Gothic religious buildings, and ancient Roman temple.

Accommodation.

DAY 5. ÉVORA – MARVÃO – CASTELO DE VIDE – TOMAR – FÁTIMA

Today we travel through the beautiful landscapes of the Alentejo region. We stop in Marvão, a very picturesque walled village offering fantastic panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. We then continue to Castelo de Vide, with its impressive castle. There will also be time to walk through its old Jewish quarter, where you may visit the medieval synagogue, now a museum, or simply wander through the town’s maze of narrow streets.

After lunch, we continue to Tomar, a town dominated by the Convent of Christ, the former castle-convent of the Knights Templar, with entrance included. Before reaching Fátima, we stop in Aljustrel, the village where the three shepherd children who witnessed the Virgin Mary were born. You will be able to see Lucia’s house. Arrival in Fátima and free time at the Sanctuary of Fátima, where, if you wish, you may attend the candlelight procession, which does not take place in winter. Dinner included.

Accommodation.

DAY 6. FÁTIMA – PORTO

We travel north through Portugal. Arrival around eleven in the morning in Porto, the country’s second-largest city. Upon arrival, we enjoy a 50-minute cruise on the Douro River aboard a traditional Portuguese Rabelo boat, allowing us to discover the city from the beauty of its riverbank. Afterwards, free time to stroll through the lively Ribeira district, with its narrow streets lined with old merchant houses and cafés, before heading to the hotel.

Accommodation.

DAY 7. PORTO – BRAGA – GUIMARÃES – BOM JESUS – PINHÃO – COIMBRA

Today we enjoy beautiful landscapes in northern Portugal. We begin with a walk through Braga, the religious capital of Portugal, with its ancient cathedral. We then ascend on the oldest funicular in the world to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus, where superb views await. We suggest walking down while admiring its magnificent staircase. Guimarães, the first capital of Portugal, still recalls its importance through the Palace of the Dukes. Time for lunch.

We then continue through stunning vineyard-covered landscapes descending into the Douro Valley. We pass through Sabrosa, birthplace of Magellan. In Pinhão, we visit its beautiful railway station, famous for its azulejo tiles, and include a short cruise of approximately one hour on the Douro River.

Please note: from November to March, the cruise does not operate and is replaced by a journey along the panoramic road with stops at viewpoints following the banks of the Douro.

We continue to Coimbra, arriving at the end of the day. Dinner at the hotel.
